Benchmarking human performance will serve to different purposes:
– Humans still represent the golden standard for most of robotic applications. The understanding and quantification of human abilities is a crucial process for comparing robotic performance with the human counterpart. The availability of specific benchmarks measuring the human likeness of the machine can help the researcher in identify the crucial issues of the machine, being it a humanoid or a rehabilitation robot.
– Human performance can be affected by neuromotor impairments, such as stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s desease, etc… The quantitative assessment of the patient’s performance with respect to the healthy behaviour is a key factor in the diagnostic process. In this respect, benchmarks can help the clinician in identifying, rapidly and reliably, the functional implications of neuromotor diseases.
